This case study focuses on the redesign of a web-based console for a molecular diagnostics device manufacturer, used primarily in hospitals, emergency rooms, and laboratories. The initial phase of the project aimed to resolve immediate usability issues within the console, which was critical for monitoring test throughput, device status, and ensuring compliance with privacy standards across various healthcare environments.

This project spanned the better part of a year, with a very high level of Stakeholder collaboration on the one hand, and rapid and iterative design work on the other. Parallel 'Tactical' and 'Strategic' workstreams enabled quick and iterative fixes alongside longer-term, more forward-looking activity.

This was part of a larger program, requiring close alignment with Agency teams and Client Stakeholders—especially as we had a transition within the Client POs.

Given the requirement to improve design, one of our team members began with a thorough review of the ‘current state’ to help prioritize obvious issues.

After establishing a baseline, we developed a comprehensive UX Strategy aimed at fixing high-priority issues whilst setting the stage for Roadmap evolution.

Having the UX Strategy translated into requirements, we moved onto iterative Design Sprints to fix all tactical high-priority issues

Throughout the first phases of the project, it became clear there were ample design flaws including inconsistencies, usability issues and even just mediocre aesthetics, branding and layout flaws.

In addition, we made efforts to better align design and development—including a shift in design tool (to Figma).

Visiontype

With the purpose to Inspire, Provoke and Align, a Visiontype is a special kind of prototype that can communicate and refine strategy

ensuring stakeholder alignment, buy-in and provide a clear and engaging vision—which helps focus efforts on delivering a valuable experience.


Product Owners had a long list on the Roadmap, but we needed a way to set a Vision that could be clearly communicated and iterated with all Stakeholders.
